Mansur al-Hallaj was a controversial and influential Persian mystic, poet, and teacher who lived during the 9th and 10th centuries. He is known for his intense devotion to God, his mystical experiences, and his bold declarations about his spiritual insights. Al-Hallaj's teachings and actions led to his eventual execution on charges of heresy.

Despite the controversy surrounding his life and teachings, Al-Hallaj's legacy endured in the realm of Sufi mysticism. His writings and ideas continued to inspire later generations of Sufis, and he became an iconic figure among those who sought deeper spiritual experiences and a direct connection with the Divine.

The following passage of Al-Hallaj has been captured using the delicate strokes of Arabic Calligraphy, taking the form of a graceful Mourning Dove. This piece was composed in October 2019:

  • English:
By God, The sun does not rise nor set,
But with each breath, I breathe my love for you.
Nor have I sat amongst a group of companions,
Only for you to be the central theme of discussion.
Nor have I remembered you in happiness, nor sorrowness
Only for you to reside in my heart, within its murmurs
Nor would I reach for a drink of water in thirst,
Without beholding your image reflected in the cup.

- Al-Hallaj
