This poem by Sufi mystic and poet Mansur al-Hallaj explores profound themes of spiritual longing, unity with the Divine, and the transformative power of love. The verses convey a deep connection between the seeker and the Divine Beloved. The poet marvels at the mutual desire for union, blurring the boundary between himself and The Beloved. He describes experiencing nearness to the Divine, feeling as if his Beloved is within him. The intensity of this connection leads to a state of being consumed by the Divine presence, where individual identity dissolves. The Divine is addressed as the source of grace and comfort in life and beyond death, the ultimate solace. The poet finds companionship and security exclusively in the Divine, where awe and refuge are united. The poem also acknowledges the Divine's encompassing wisdom and creativity, serving as the source of all meanings and desires. The verses encapsulate the essence of Sufi mysticism, emphasizing the journey of spiritual union, self-dissolution, and the transformative love that unites the seeker with the Divine Beloved.

Arabic Calligraphy is used to capture the following passage of Al-Hallaj. Composed in March 2021.

  • English:

Amazed by You and I, O You, the utmost desire of every wisher.
You drew me closer to You, until, I thought we had become One-
And I immersed myself in the thought of You, until, I joyfully dissipated
For in You, I find my blessing in life, and rest beyond the grave.
I seek no intimacy other than Yours, for You are my sole consoler.
It is You, who eases my fears and insecurities.
And it is by You, that all art may be surrounded by the horizons of meaning
Should I ever be granted a wish, that wish, will forever and always, be You.

-Al-Hallaj
