"The Song of the Reed" was written by the famous 13th-century Persian poet Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī, commonly known as Rumi. This poem is a part of his collection of mystical poetry called the "Masnavi" or "Mathnawi," which is a significant work in Sufi literature.

"The Song of the Reed" is a metaphorical and allegorical piece that reflects the Sufi concept of longing and the soul's desire to return to its source. In this poem, the reed flute symbolizes the human soul separated from its divine origin and yearning to return to it.  Here's a translation of the opening lines of the poem:

  • English Translation:
Hear from the reed flute for it complains,
It tells the stories of separation’s pains.
Saying, “Ever since I was parted from the reed-bed,
Many men and women have cried into my head.
I seek a heart torn up from longing,
So I can share the pain of yearning.
Whoever remains far from their roots will yearn
For the day they can return.
In every assembly, I’ve cried out in distress,
I’ve been a partner to all, whether in happiness or sadness.
Everyone who thought that they became my friend,
Never found the secrets inside me by the end.”

-Rumi
