Ibn al-Farid was a renowned Sufi poet from Egypt who lived in the 13th century. He is considered one of the greatest mystical poets in Arabic literature and an influential figure within Sufi mysticism.

Ibn al-Farid is particularly known for his poetry written in the style of the qasida (a classical Arabic poetic form). His poems often explore themes of divine love, spiritual yearning, and the path of mysticism. His verses are characterized by intricate wordplay, deep metaphysical concepts, and a profound exploration of the relationship between the lover and the Divine Beloved.

The following verses were captured through the use of Arabic Calligraphy, to shape an anatomical eye. Composed in September 2021.

  • English:
You have nearness to me, in your distance from me. For your love is present, despite your absence.
In my longing for you, my eyes remain wide awake. Yet even without a sliver of sleep, all they seek is you.
And I yearn to lose Myself in that sleepless night, to retreat into Your glorious creation.
By God, and by all that is true, I gaze to the moon, and sense your majesty within and without. Yet I cannot perceive any of it. I cannot look to anything at all; without the essence of You.

-Ibn Al-Farid
